Resonant Realms - Foundation

Understand the Instrument

Begin Properly. Build Slowly. Develop Your Craft.

Resonant Realms - Foundation is a practical two-day beginners’ workshop in Himalayan Singing Bowls and Gongs, designed for people who want to develop their sound practice from strong foundations.

No previous experience is required and you do not need to own or bring instruments.

We begin with the individual, the instrument and the sound being created.

Before a Singing Bowl or Gong is applied to meditation, wellbeing practice, performance, a Sound Journey or any other method, we believe the practitioner should first learn how to approach the instrument with understanding: how it responds, how to choose appropriate tools, how to create and control sound without unnecessary force, and how to listen closely to what happens after the initial strike.

Resonant Realms - Foundation is therefore not about learning a prescribed method.

It is about learning how to begin well.

Experience Required

None.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as people who already own Singing Bowls or Gongs but would like to establish or improve their fundamental playing and listening skills.

You do not need a collection of instruments in order to participate.

What This Module Develops

Resonant Realms - Foundation establishes the relationship between practitioner and instrument.

Through demonstration, repeated practice and close listening, you begin to understand how small changes in touch, movement, mallet choice and playing technique influence the sound being produced.

Particular attention is given to gentleness and control.

Rather than chasing volume or immediately adding more sounds, we learn to hear the complete life of an individual tone: its attack, resonance, changing overtones, sustain, vibration and decay.

You also begin developing one of the most important skills within the entire Resonant Realms pathway:

knowing how to listen before deciding what to play next.

What You Will Explore

During the two days we work practically with:

  • safe and confident handling and positioning of Singing Bowls and Gongs

  • choosing appropriate mallets and understanding how different tools affect the instrument

  • producing clear, controlled tones without excessive force

  • fundamental striking and playing techniques

  • differences in tone, dynamics, responsiveness and sustain

  • listening beyond the initial strike into resonance and changing overtones

  • developing sensitivity to touch, movement and physical vibration

  • allowing decay and silence to become part of the playing process

  • beginning to make deliberate choices rather than simply producing sound

Participants work with a broad selection of instruments rather than becoming accustomed to only one bowl or gong. This helps develop adaptability and a greater understanding of how different instruments respond.

A Foundation, Not a Qualification

Two days can establish strong foundations.

They cannot create mastery.

Skill develops gradually through listening, repetition, experimentation and continued practice. We do not present Resonant Realms - Foundation as a fast-track route to becoming a teacher, therapist or master practitioner.

Our purpose is to give you the practical skills, understanding and confidence from which your own practice can develop.

Good habits established at the beginning make everything that follows possible.

A Specialist Learning Environment

The workshop takes place at the fully equipped Silence In Sound studio in Machynlleth, Mid Wales.

The group is deliberately limited to four participants, providing time for individual attention, questions, repeated practice and unhurried learning.

Our extensive collection of Singing Bowls, Gongs and mallets allows participants to experience genuine differences in size, tone, response and character without needing to purchase an instrument before attending.

Your Place in the Resonant Realms Pathway

Resonant Realms is a progressive programme:

Resonant Realms - Foundation → Resonant Realms 1 - The Acoustic Soundscape → Resonant Realms 2 - The Expanded Soundscape

Resonant Realms - Foundation develops the relationship between you and the instrument.

Completion of Resonant Realms - Foundation is required before progressing to Resonant Realms 1.
