Silence In Sound is based at 1st Floor, Owain Glyndŵr Centre, Maengwyn Street, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 8EE.

Whether you are visiting us for a Private Studio Visit or attending one of our Creative Sound Workshops, the following information may help you plan your time in Machynlleth. The town centre is compact, with a good choice of independent cafés, places to eat, shops and transport connections. Visit Mid Wales describes Machynlleth as having an established food culture, with independent cafés, delis and restaurants concentrated around the town centre. 

Please check opening hours directly before travelling, particularly for evening meals, Sundays and Bank Holidays, as local opening times can change seasonally.

Food, coffee & refreshments

• Coffee & Breakfast & light refreshments: Hermit Crab Coffee on Heol Maengwyn is an independent coffee shop in the town centre. Caffi Glyndŵr, also on Heol Maengwyn, is another convenient café option. Y Gegin Fach offers café-style food and refreshments nearby.

• Vegetarian: Tŷ Medi specialises in vegetarian food and is located on Heol Maengwyn. Its opening days are currently more limited than some other cafés, so checking ahead is advisable.

• Deli & lighter food: Blasau Delicatessen on Penrallt Street is useful for deli food and lighter options.

• Fish & chips: Hennighan's Fish and Chip Bottom Shop and Hennighan's Fish & Chip Top Shop provide straightforward lunch or evening options in the town centre.

• Indian food: Shilam Tandori (Machynlleth) on Penrallt Street is an evening option.

• Pub, restaurant & evening meals: The Wynnstay is a traditional town-centre hotel and restaurant on Maengwyn Street; Visit Mid Wales describes it as offering dining and an extensive wine list. Skinners Arms is a traditional pub on Penrallt Street. The White Lion Hotel is another central hotel/pub option.

• Food and essentials: SPAR Machynlleth and Co-op Food - Machynlleth are both on Maengwyn Street and useful for drinks, snacks and other essentials. Cambrian Butchers and Farm Shop and Cafe is another local option for food and produce.

Travelling by train

Machynlleth railway station is on the Cambrian Line and provides connections towards Shrewsbury and Birmingham, as well as west towards Aberystwyth and the Cambrian Coast/Pwllheli. Transport for Wales operates the station and provides live journey information through its journey planner.

For visitors travelling from Aberystwyth, the rail journey to Machynlleth is approximately 30 minutes. 

The station has a car park with 30 spaces, including accessible parking, although visitors arriving by car for Silence In Sound should normally use town parking rather than relying on railway-station parking. 

Travelling by bus

Machynlleth is served by several regional bus routes operated principally by Lloyds Coaches and TrawsCymru. Current services include the T2, connecting Machynlleth with Aberystwyth, Dolgellau, Porthmadog, Caernarfon and Bangor; the T12, linking towards Newtown, Welshpool and Wrexham; the X85 towards Newtown; and the G21 towards Aberdyfi, Tywyn, Fairbourne and Dolgellau. 

Because timetables and connections can change, we recommend checking TrawsCymru, Lloyds Coaches or Traveline Cymru shortly before travelling rather than relying on printed times. 

Travelling by car & parking

Machynlleth has a Powys County Council long-stay pay-and-display car park on Maengwyn Street, SY20 8DY, which includes disabled parking spaces. Current council charges are £1.50 for up to one hour, £2.50 for up to two hours, £3.50 for two to four hours and £5.00 for more than four hours; these charges may change, so visitors should check current information before travelling. 

​For a Private Studio Visit, we will send more specific parking, directions and arrival information once your appointment has been confirmed.

Taxis

Local taxi availability can be limited compared with larger towns, so pre-booking is advisable, particularly for early mornings, evenings or connections with trains. Visit Mid Wales also recommends pre-booking taxis at smaller Mid Wales stations. 

Mach Taxis is based in Machynlleth and provides local journeys as well as longer-distance and station connections. 

For workshop participants

If you are attending a full-day or multi-day Creative Sound Workshop, we recommend planning meals and travel arrangements before arriving. Machynlleth has several daytime cafés, but evening and Sunday choices can be more limited and opening days vary.

Where refreshments or lunch are included as part of a particular Silence In Sound workshop, this will be stated in the individual event information. Otherwise, participants are welcome to use the local cafés, restaurants and food shops during scheduled breaks.
