Resonant Realms 2 - The Expanded Soundscape is the third and most technologically expanded stage of the Resonant Realms pathway.

Building upon the acoustic composition, microphones and amplification introduced in Resonant Realms 1 - The Acoustic Soundscape, this two-day workshop explores how sound can be extended through delay, reverb, looping, live processing and mixing.

Completion of Resonant Realms 1 - The Acoustic Soundscape is required.

Technology is not used to compensate for poor playing or weak listening. It is used to extend an already considered acoustic sound.

What You Will Explore

During the two days you will work practically with:

• microphones and amplification

• contact and boundary microphones

• delay and reverb

• looping and evolving layers

• live processing of Singing Bowls, Gongs, Waterphone and other instruments

• mixer operation and effects routing

• balancing acoustic and processed sound

• controlling density within layered compositions

• recognising when processing adds something — and when it should be removed

• collaborative expanded soundscape construction

The objective is not to collect effect settings.

It is to understand why, when and how technology should be used.

Understanding the Signal Path

A practical understanding of the basic signal path is developed throughout the workshop:

Instrument → Microphone → Mixer → Effect → Amplification

The aim is not to become an audio engineer, but to become sufficiently comfortable with the equipment that attention can return to what matters most:

listening and creative decision-making.

The Soundscape Road Map - Expanded

The Soundscape Road Map developed in Resonant Realms 1 remains central:

Opening → Ascent → Zenith → Descent → Stillness

In Resonant Realms 2, electronic processing becomes another compositional possibility within that structure.

Loops can establish foundations. Delay can introduce movement and distance. Reverb can alter the perception of space. Layers can build, transform and gradually disappear.

The Road Map remains a framework for judgement rather than a recipe.

Foundation develops the relationship with the instrument.

Resonant Realms 1 develops the relationships between sounds.

Resonant Realms 2 explores how those sounds can be extended, transformed and expanded through contemporary sound technology.

Resonant Realms 2 is a complete module in its own right and the final stage of the current pathway. There is no expectation that every Resonant Realms participant will progress this far.

Begin with Foundation. Continue as far as your own practice requires.

Limited to just 4 participants, this workshop takes place in our studio in Machynlleth on the Southern tip of the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, mid-Wales.
