Resonant Realms 1 - The Acoustic Soundscape is the second stage of the Silence In Sound progressive learning pathway.

Having established fundamental instrument handling, controlled playing and close listening during Foundation, we now move beyond the individual sound and begin exploring acoustic composition.

The question changes.

It is no longer simply:

Can I produce this sound?

It becomes:

What does this sound contribute to everything around it?

Resonant Realms 1 explores timing, texture, dynamics, contrast, layering, transition, space and silence — the decisions that begin turning individual sounds into a coherent soundscape.

Prerequisite

Completion of Resonant Realms - Foundation is required.

Resonant Realms 1 assumes that participants already understand the fundamental approach to Singing Bowls and Gongs developed during Foundation.

We do not return to the beginning. We build upon it.

What This Module Develops

Foundation develops the relationship between practitioner and instrument.

Resonant Realms 1 develops the relationships between sounds.

In Foundation we learn to listen closely to an individual tone. Here, that listening expands outward.

What happens when resonances overlap?

When does layering enrich a composition and when does it become congested?

How can a small bell alter the character of a deep Gong?

How long should a texture remain?

What should follow it?

And when should nothing be added at all?

As technique becomes more secure, attention shifts increasingly towards judgement and compositional choice.

What You Will Explore

Resonant Realms 1 broadens the acoustic palette through practical work with:

• Himalayan Singing Bowls

• Original Singing Gongs

• Professional Flumies

• Waterphone

• bells and chimes

• complementary acoustic and overtone-rich instruments

• basic microphone and amplification

Throughout the workshop we explore:

• greater control and versatility with familiar instruments

• relationships between contrasting tones and textures

• pacing, dynamics, repetition and restraint

• layering without overcrowding the soundscape

• transitions between different sonic environments

• ensemble awareness and listening while others are playing

• acousmatic and blind listening

• the deliberate use of resonance, decay, space and silence

• developing longer-form acoustic composition

• increasing confidence in making independent creative decisions

Techniques are introduced because of what they can contribute to a composition — not simply because they are new.

The question is always: why does this sound belong here?

The Soundscape Road Map

A central element of RR1 is the Silence In Sound Soundscape Road Map:

Opening → Ascent → Zenith → Descent → Stillness

The Road Map is not a fixed sequence of instruments or a formula for producing a Sound Journey.

It is a practical framework for exploring structure, movement, pacing and compositional decision-making.

Participants discover that an Opening need not always begin in the same way, a Zenith does not necessarily mean maximum volume, and a Descent can involve removing layers rather than simply playing more quietly.

The purpose is to develop an awareness of the shape and direction of the complete soundscape.

A Specialist Learning Environment

Resonant Realms 1 takes place within the fully equipped Silence In Sound studio in Machynlleth, Mid Wales.

The workshop is limited to four participants, allowing time for demonstration, experimentation, repeated practice, collaborative work and individual feedback.

Access to an extensive instrument collection means participants can explore different tonal relationships and textures without needing to own or transport a large personal collection.

Time to listen is deliberately built into the teaching.

Completion of Resonant Realms 1 is required before progressing to Resonant Realms 2.

Foundation teaches us to understand the individual sound. Resonant Realms 1 teaches us to understand what happens between sounds.

Limited to just 4 participants, this workshop takes place in our studio in Machynlleth on the Southern tip of the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, mid-Wales.
